Mass Academy Students Invited to Participate in MJAS Fall Symposium
Three seniors from the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Mass Academy) have been invited to register for the Massachusetts Junior Academy of Science (MJAS) fall symposium scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 21 on the MIT campus. Students were selected based on their outstanding performance at the 2023 Massachusetts Science and Engineering Fair or International Science and Engineering Fair.
The Mass Academy students recognized by MJAS and their research project titles are: Samhitha Bodangi: Analyzing HLA Sequences to Predict Organ Rejection and Find Optimal Targets for Immunosuppression; Sophia Caramanica: Orthotic hand brace to improve range of motion in patients with cerebral palsy; and Kayla Vallecillo: Minimizing Fuel-Oxidizer Mixture Inhomogeneities in Rotating Detonation Engines. The students conducted their research projects during the 2023-2024 school year as part of their STEM class taught by Dr. Kevin Crowthers at Mass Academy.
“We are very proud of our students for their achievements at the state and international fairs, as well as for this recognition by MJAS. The students’ professionalism throughout the research process has been exemplary. Our students represent the future of the STEM workforce and have demonstrated they have the curiosity, ingenuity, and skill to make a real impact,” said Anne Ludes, Director of Mass Academy. “For many of our students, this is their first experience with an independent research project. We are very fortunate to have amazing educators like Dr. Crowthers to help our students navigate the research process.”
The American Junior Academy of Science (AJAS) is a national honor society that recognizes high school students from across the country for their scientific research. The Massachusetts Junior Academy of Science selects delegates to participate in the AJAS national convention which will be held in February.
