A Day in the Life of Junior: Mihika Chalasani
Every morning Mihika Chalasani arrives at Mass Academy from her hometown of Boylston. After carpooling with her friend Nihitha Reddy, the girls arrive at school around 7:30 am.
Despite attending Mass Academy, Chalasani remains involved in sports at her sending school of Tahanto Regional High School. Currently, Chalasani is a player on their girls varsity field hockey team.
Like all juniors, Chalasani signs into school and then makes her way to her locker. She drops off her field hockey bag because she regularly has practices and games after school. And then, she is off to classes!
At Mass Academy, the order of classes changes daily depending on the section. This year, the grade is divided up into W, P, and I sections. Each section consists of students taking the same language class.
“I like the schedule changing everyday because it helps me not get bored,” said Chalasani.
Today, Chalasani attends physics first and then math modeling. After these first two classes, she has a 45 minute homeroom, compared to the usual 30 minutes. Following this break, she attends computer science, humanities, and language class. On this day, these classes are shorter than normal to accommodate for a full-grade STEM class scheduled for the afternoon.
Following lunch, she attends STEM class where she prepares with her group for an upcoming scientific literature presentation. This project involves an in-depth analysis of a piece of scientific literature and culminates in a presentation of the article’s measurement methods and results.
After school, Chalasani has her first playoff game of the MIAA field hockey tournament. As soon as STEM class finishes, she rushes from Mass Academy to Tahanto High School to catch the bus to Hopedale. On this team, she plays left forward.
“I’ve always loved field hockey because my dad played it before me and I’ve always felt a close bond with everyone on my team,” she said.
Mass Academy has definitely been an adjustment for Chalasani–especially in terms of her schedule.
“It was a little difficult to get used to [Mass Academy] at first because school ends 30 mins later than my old school so I was always a little late to practices, games, and student council events,” she said. “But overall, I am enjoying the new schedule and the people I have met at MAMS.”
After field hockey, Chalasani usually gets home anywhere from six to nine PM depending on when and where her game is. After coming home, she usually relaxes and starts on her homework for the night, getting ready for her next day as a junior at Mass Academy.
