Math Team Announcements

It has been a busy year of math competitions! Below are some highlights from each contest. Some competitions we typically compete in were not offered this year (hopefully to return next year).

The Math Team captains, seniors Andrew Lee, Shreya Majumdar, Karthik Seetharaman, and Justin Wang, organized 14 practices for the Math Team extracurricular. Almost every Wednesday since the start of the school year, 30-40 students met to study math and share contest strategies. The practices focused on developing math competition skills as well as teamwork and collaboration.

Each student listed in the senior or junior section below competed in one or more Worcester County Mathematics League (WOCOMAL) competitions. Mass Academy students can compete in other math competitions and not be part of the Math Team.

New England Math League

All juniors competed in this contest, along with six seniors. The contest has six rounds of six one-point questions.

Massachusetts Association of Math Leagues (MAML)

Approximately 550 Massachusetts students competed in the 15-question MAML contest on October 21, 2021. There were 33 Mass Academy students.

The top 3 scorers for Mass Academy are Karthik Seetharaman (perfect score), Andrew Lee, and Justin Wang.

High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM)

Mass Academy had 14 teams (13 junior teams and 1 senior team) compete in the HiMCM on November 11-15, 2021. The teams worked hard preparing their papers on one of two choices for modeling problems. It was an exciting contest once again and we thank the families for supporting the students during the contest. We had 8 teams qualify to move onto the 5-day International Mathematical Modeling Challenge, the IMMC, by scoring a designation of Outstanding, Finalist, or Meritorious on their HiMCM paper. Five of the teams will compete in the IMMC*.

Worcester County Mathematics League (WOCOMAL)

Mass Academy had 39 students compete in WOCOMAL this season (the highest number of students of the 33 competing schools). This season the four contests were taken onsite at each school, each student competing in each of the 5 rounds. Only the top 3 rounds for each meet are recorded on the WOCOMAL site (no team round).

Mass Academy has 4 of the top 10 scorers in WOCOMAL: Karthik Seetharaman, Andrew Lee, Gracie Sheng, and Krishna Purimetla (and 27 of the top 100 scorers).

American Mathematics Competitions (AMC12)

Mass Academy had 35 students compete in either the AMC12A or AMC12B contests in early November 2021. We had eight students qualify to participate in the American Invitational Mathematics Exam, the AIME. The 15-question, 3-hour AIME took place on February 2, 2021. The scores should be released soon.

MathWorks Modeling Challenge

Mass Academy had two teams compete in the 14-hour MathWorks Modeling Challenge. The 5-member teams worked together to provide a solution on the topic of Remote Work, Is it a Fad or a Future Option?

Incredibly both Mass Academy teams moved on to the second round of judging. Only 113 of the 612 teams that submitted viable solution papers – about 18.5% – were selected to advance to the second round of judging.

We would like to further congratulate Team 15836 for receiving one of 22 Honorable Mention awards. Students should be very proud of this distinction, especially given the rigorous and intense scrutiny that each paper endured. Only about 6% of the submitted papers were selected for prize recognition.

MathWorks provides Honorable Mention teams with scholarships in the amount of $1,000 per team, to be divided equally among the team’s members. The individual amounts will be paid directly to the colleges or universities at which the winning students ultimately enroll.

We are proud of both teams for their work, effort, attitude, giving their best, having fun, and participating.

Purple Comet

Mass Academy will again compete in the Purple Comet Math Competition in April 2022. The Purple Comet is a 30-question, 90-minute team competition for high school students in teams of up to six students. We look forward to the contest each year.
